Touring the South of England – If you’ve ever wanted to tour the pastoral lands of Southern England, a vast touring route now makes this dream a reality.
If traveling with a lot of other tourists doesn’t bother you, from May to September you’ll find the majority of festivals occurring in the region. The two most sought-after festivals include June’s Royal Ascot Races and September’s Jane Austen Festival. Travel outside of these months, however, ensures you can travel at your own pace without the barrage of visitors.
The touring route spoken of above, the Great West Way, opened to the public near the end of 2018. It was based on the 20th century Great Road that was commissioned by the monarchy. It stretches 125 miles, starting in London and ending in Bristol. It connects several small villages between the two points – villages that have never seen tourism. There are several ways you can traverse the route, or just sections of it, at your own pace.
You can travel the Way from London to Bristol by car, use the railway to town-hop, or charter a crewed boat to traverse the Thames and its canals. If you’re more of a hiker or cyclist, you can also use marked trails to explore the route for a day or longer. All along the marked trail are various lodging options, from campgrounds to castles, and farms to luxury boutique hotels. In the tiny, don’t-blink-or-you’ll-miss-it town of Bray, you’ll find Monkey Island Estate. There are three restaurants on the estate, all of Michelin-star status. A little farther to the west, in Bath, thanks to its UNESCO status, you’ll find newly opened baths, including a Roman sauna and visitor’s center.
To get to the Great West Way, take a direct flight to Heathrow Airport in London or Gatwick Airport. Upon arrival, purchase a Discoverer Pass so you can avail unlimited transportation via rail or bus between London and Bristol stations. With the visitor information packet available with your Discoverer Pass, you’ll learn the various options for branching off the beaten path into the Thames Valley, Cotswolds, or into Wiltshire.
